Embracing the Metaverse: Enjoy the Thrills of Playing Lego Fortnite

The individual behind the ingenious fusion of three modern entertainment giants—Lego, Fortnite, and Minecraft—must be reveling in their brilliance at this moment. Debuted on Thursday, Lego Fortnite emerges not just as a mode within Fortnite, but as a distinct game in its own right—a sprawling crafting survival simulation set in an unmistakably Minecraft-style open world. In this realm, players step into a procedurally generated universe tailored uniquely to them, seamlessly blending the visual appeal of Lego and Fortnite. It captivates with vibrant colors, a toy-like allure, and the familiar charm of these iconic worlds.

Similar to Minecraft, the primary allure lies in its survival mode, allowing players to traverse the wilds, construct homes, cultivate crops, rear animals, and confront a variety of creatures. Initially armed with basic building guidelines, players can only erect modest huts. However, advancing through the game and gathering resources like wood, granite, and wool unlocks a wider array of building materials for further construction endeavors.

Just like in Minecraft, the game features a day/night cycle. Daylight encourages exploration and construction, but when night falls, caution is vital as spooky skeletons and various monsters emerge. While traversing the expansive landscapes of rolling hills, deserts, and plains, players encounter treasure chests, deserted structures, and hidden secrets. Occasionally, vibrant will-o’-the-wisp-like entities guide players toward intriguing discoveries and fascinating locales amidst their wanderings.

While the world isn’t as adaptable as Minecraft, mining for diamonds by digging into the earth isn’t an option. Nevertheless, the scope for constructing Lego buildings is remarkable, with Epic and Lego planning to introduce “thousands” of physical Lego blocks and components to enrich the game. Introducing crafting tables, a lumber mill, and a spinning wheel unlocks an extensive range of crafting possibilities—empowering players to fashion swords, shields, and elaborate interior decorations. For those inclined solely towards the building, a creative mode is available, eliminating monsters, the day/night cycle, and survival elements, offering a serene environment for leisurely exploration and construction.

No matter the mode you choose, you can invite up to seven other players to join your world, fostering collaborative exploration and construction. During a two-hour session with my soon-to-be-18-year-old eldest son, the experience evoked nostalgia, reminiscent of our past days playing Minecraft on the Xbox 360 together. It unexpectedly evoked a wave of emotions, creating a poignant evening of shared bonding.

Absolutely, it’s evident that this is a reimagined iteration influenced by Minecraft (and let’s acknowledge, Minecraft itself drew significant inspiration from the indie game Infiniminer). However, it’s presented as a rich and incredibly soothing offshoot. Players delve into customizing their minifig avatars, immersing themselves in the construction and exploration of a sprawling landscape spanning approximately 95 square kilometers, including mysterious caverns yet to be discovered. The game exudes a gentle ambiance, from its serene visuals to the exquisite lighting (thanks to Unreal Engine 5) and captivating sound effects. It’s a masterfully crafted tie-in, displaying exceptional production quality.

The evolution of the community will be intriguing to witness. When I downloaded Lego Fortnite last night, a staggering two million individuals were already engaged—what creative wonders will they forge? Undoubtedly, this represents a colossal synergy of multimillion-dollar corporations with a somewhat derivative approach, yet if major entertainment brands are venturing into metaverse-style experiences, let them emulate this model: free to access, meticulously designed, and immensely enjoyable.
