Seychelles blast site as resembling a war zone

President Wavel Ramkalawan described the aftermath of a massive explosion in an industrial zone on Mahé, the main island of Seychelles, likening it to the aftermath of a war. The explosion caused extensive devastation, though fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities aside from one individual in intensive care. The incident, occurring at a construction and quarrying company storing explosives in containers, happened around 02:00 local time. The impact, compounded by heavy rains causing flooding, prompted the declaration of a state of emergency, which has since been lifted. President Ramkalawan had ordered most individuals, barring essential workers, to remain at home following the explosion.

“The detonation of four containers of explosives has deeply affected us. My heart weighs heavy, understanding the impact on numerous families. Witnessing the devastation in Providence, Petit Paris, and Cascade was shocking—it resembled the aftermath of a war.”

Detailing the magnitude of the blast, Seychelles Minister of Fisheries, Jean-François Ferrari, expressed, “The explosion was immensely powerful, resonating so loudly that it excavated a 13-meter crater in the ground. Its force shattered windows, doors, and roofs of multiple commercial buildings.”

The impact extended to the international airport, located 4km away, causing damage. Schools have been closed, and hospitals are attending only to emergency cases.

Over 170 casualties have been reported, primarily with minor injuries, while five individuals have been hospitalized, with one in critical condition.

Movement is restricted, with access limited to and from the holiday islands. Given Seychelles’ significant dependence on tourism, the country’s economy faces considerable implications.

As per the country’s official statement on X, the Seychelles International Airport remains functional, and ferry services between islands are operational for incoming and outgoing visitors.

The torrential rain overnight led to severe flooding and landslides, intensifying the challenges faced by the island’s response teams.

Tragically, three individuals lost their lives as their homes were destroyed in the midst of this natural disaster.

The excessive rainfall also resulted in sewage flowing into the ocean, prompting advisories against swimming in affected areas.

President Ramkalawan characterized these dual disasters as a “calamity” for the nation, urging the population to come together in solidarity and support those impacted by the events.
